1989 Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Arts Festival
As gays and lesbians, many of us have had the luxury of being able to hide who we are. But that ìluxuryî has bee one of the greatest hindrances to our survival, for as long as we cooperated, our existence could be denied and our voices silenced. The Gay & Lesbian Arts Festival (GALA) is a celebration of our visibility and our pride. It is time for the Philadelphia community to come together to enjoy the achievements of lesbian and gay artists. It is time to honor a distinct lesbian and gay culture.
GALA is held each year during June, Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, to honor those brave Stonewall rioters who broke centuries of silence and gave birth to a loud and proud gay and lesbian political and cultural struggle.
This year, GALA will mark the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall by featuring readings from Donn Tealís account of the riots in the ìGay Militantsî. It will also feature individual testimonies on what Stonewall means today.
GALA is a project of Poets and Prophets, the cityís grassroots poetry organization. Poets and Prophets is the only;y non-gay arts organization in the city that regularly promotes gay and lesbian poets, writers and performance artists. GALA is funded in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
GALA is run by a committee of artists, poets, writers and performers. The committee represents the diversity of the gay and lesbian community- different races, cultures, genders and lifestyles. Committee members include Robert Arrington, Tommi Avicolli, Robyn Barr, Keith Breitfeller, Thom Cardwell, Shawn DeVeareaux, Angela Garner, Val King, Shilpa Mehta, Jeri Nutter, Bob Small & Oscar Garcia-Vera.
Thanks to Limerance, Ethical Society, Taller Puertyrriqueno, Video Box, Giovanniís Room, Painted Bride, Book Trader, Zone One & Twilite Zone for their support.
